Spring Bulb Care

Thank you so much for supporting our family farm! We hope you enjoy our wonderful Tulips and Hyacinths  for years to come!

For Tulips, Grape Hyacinths, and other Hyacinths please plant as soon as possible to prevent bulb rot if in package and drying out if out of package. A little mold is okay, but its best to plant immediately after purchase. If you would like to plant the whole flower for immediate landscaping it is best to place flower in a bucket of water to hydrate fully before planting. This way stems will become more stiff and you can avoid the bending stage.

For spring flowers with the bulb on you have a few options:

1. Plant the whole flower bulb and all and enjoy the instant landscaping. This is the best way to get a higher percent of your bulbs to come back year after year.

2. Leave at least one leaf on the bulb and remove the flower to enjoy inside in a vase.

3. Enjoy the flowers and throw away the bulb or leave the bulb on in the vase for an interesting design and a longer life.

4. Recutting fresh flowers often and changing their water will lead to long vase life.

Tulips

  • Plant immediately. Do not let the bulb dry out.
  • Tulip bulbs should be planted about 8” deep.
  • If cutting the flowers off to enjoy indoors, leave one leaf on the bulb to stick out of the ground
  • To use for landscaping, plant the entire flower attached to the bulb covering the bulb with  8” of soil
  • Water the bulb in the hole and after planting

The success rate of the bulbs increase if you leave the flower on. Our customers have seen an over  80% success rate in keeping the flower on. I often plant old bulbs from our farm without any care and  they take two years to establish properly…so leaving a leaf on is very important.
